Manage Workareas
Workspace owners have visibility and control over every workarea in the workspace — not just the ones they belong to. From the Workareas settings panel, you can configure workspace-wide defaults, restrict who can create new workareas, take ownership of orphaned spaces, and archive or restore workareas as needed. 🪂
In addition to the workspace-level settings covered here, each individual workarea also has its own configurable settings. See Intro to Workareas for workarea-level configuration options.
Access Workarea Settings
- Click Settings in the left sidebar
- Navigate to the Workareas tab
Manage Default Workareas
Default workareas are workareas that every workspace member — both current and future — is automatically added to. They're the shared home base of your workspace.
Add a Default Workarea
- Search for and select a workarea you own
- Click Update to apply the change
Converting a workarea to a default automatically adds every current workspace member to it.
Remove a Default Workarea
- Click the ⨉ icon next to the workarea you want to remove from the defaults list
- Click Update
Converting a default workarea back into a regular workarea will automatically remove all workspace members from it.
For most workspaces, a single default workarea is sufficient. Even for large organizations, keeping default workareas to no more than three is strongly recommended.
Manage Workarea Creation
By default, any workspace member can create a new workarea. You can restrict this so only workspace owners have that ability.
- Toggle Limit workarea creation to only workspace owners ON — only workspace owners can create new workareas
- Toggle OFF — all workspace members are free to create workareas
Manage Existing Workareas in Your Workspace
View All Existing Workareas
The Workareas settings tab displays a complete list of every workarea in the workspace. Each row shows:
| Column | What it Shows |
|---|---|
| Owners | The workarea owner(s) |
| Members | Total member count — click to expand and see the full list |
| Access | The workarea's visibility level |
| Updated | Timestamp of the last update — click the column header to sort chronologically |
Access level descriptions:
| Level | Who Can See and Join |
|---|---|
| Open | Anyone in the workspace can join and view all content inside |
| Private | Only existing members and owners can invite others — the workarea is invisible to everyone else |
You can also search for specific workareas, create new workareas from this panel, and filter by status (active or archived), owner, and access level.
Take Ownership of a Workarea
Enterprise workspace owners can view, join, and assume ownership of any workarea in the workspace — including private ones they were never invited to.
- Click Settings in the left sidebar
- Navigate to the Workareas tab
- Find the workarea you want to manage
- Click the
•••button on the right side of that workarea's row - Choose Join as member or Join as owner
Manage Workareas Without an Owner
When everyone who was an owner of a workarea has left the workspace, that workarea becomes ownerless — and without an owner, nobody can manage its settings or membership. Workspace owners can identify and fix this situation.
- Click Settings in the left sidebar
- Navigate to the Workareas tab
- Click the Owner filter button → choose Workareas with no owners
- Find the ownerless workarea
- Click
•••→ choose the appropriate action to assign ownership
