Comments, Mentions & Reactions

Comments, @-mentions, and reactions are the connective tissue of collaboration in Closot. They let you flag things, ask questions, loop in colleagues, reference other pages, and respond to content — without switching tools or sending a separate message.

Comments

Top-Level Page Discussions

Top-level comments sit at the head of the page and serve as the general discussion thread for that document.

To add a top-level comment: Hover near the top of any page and click Add comment. You can @-mention teammates directly inside the comment to bring them into the conversation.

To manage a comment:

  • Hover over the comment → click ✔️ to resolve it
  • Hover → click •••Edit comment or Delete comment

To re-open a resolved comment: Click 💬 at the top of the page → filter by Resolved → click ↪️ on the resolved comment you want to reopen.

Inline Page Comments

Inline comments attach to specific text or blocks within the page body — useful for targeted feedback, questions about a particular sentence, or flagging a specific item in a list.

Five ways to add an inline comment:

  1. Select any text → click Comment in the popup menu that appears
  2. Hover to the left of a block → click the ⋮⋮ icon → select Comment
  3. Hover over a block → click the 💬 icon that appears on the right
  4. Use the keyboard shortcut: Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + M
  5. Click 💬 on an existing comment thread to add a reply
note

You cannot comment on multiple blocks simultaneously. However, you can select text that spans across multiple blocks and comment via the popup menu that appears.

Customize Comment Display Style

  1. Click ••• at the top of the page → Customize page
  2. Select Inline comments
  3. Choose:
    • Default — all comments displayed in the right margin, fully visible
    • Minimal — only small comment icons shown; click to expand and read

Comments Pane

The Comments pane gives you a full overview of all discussion threads on a page in one place.

To open it: Click 💬 at the top of the page.

A red circle on the 💬 icon indicates unread comments.

From the Comments pane you can:

  • Click any comment to jump to its location on the page
  • Reply, edit, resolve, or delete comments
  • Filter comments by person or status using the filter icon at the top of the pane
note

Comment threads are sorted by most recent reply at the top. Once you open the Comments pane, the sort order won't automatically re-shuffle as new comments come in — so you can keep working from your current position without losing track.

Comments on Database Items

How to comment on a page inside a database:

  1. Open the database page and add a top-level comment at the head of the page
note

In timeline view, row-level commenting is only available if you have the table panel visible alongside the timeline. Click >> on the left edge of the timeline to show the table panel.

Comments on database properties: In table view, hover over any property cell → click 💬 to leave a comment directly on that property value. You can also do this from inside the open database page by hovering over a property.

Mentions

Mention a Person or Group

Type @ followed by the person's or group's name anywhere on a page. A real-time search popup appears — press Enter to confirm the mention.

The mentioned person receives a notification in their Inbox.

note

Hovering over a @-mentioned group shows a preview of up to 10 of its members. To see the full list: Settings → Members → Groups → expand the group.

Mentions in databases: You can @-mention someone inside the body of a database page, or add them to a Person property field. Both methods trigger the same type of notification — useful for formally assigning someone to a task or item.

Mention a Page

Type @ followed by the page's title. A real-time search popup appears — press Enter to insert the link.

The page title displayed in the @-mention automatically updates if the page is ever renamed.

tip

Every @-mention of a page automatically creates a backlink on that page — so the referenced page can track everywhere it has been mentioned across the workspace.

Mention a Date

Type @ followed by a date (e.g., @12/15) or the words today, tomorrow, or yesterday to insert an inline date timestamp.

Example: @12/15 renders as December 15.

The words today, tomorrow, and yesterday automatically resolve to their corresponding calendar dates as time passes.

Mention Notifications

When someone @-mentions you:

  • A red badge appears next to Inbox in the sidebar, showing the number of unread notifications
  • Clicking the notification takes you directly to the location where you were mentioned
note

If you @-mention someone on a page they don't have access to — such as a private page — they will not receive any notification.

From your Inbox, you can reply to comment mentions, resolve threads, or re-open them directly without navigating to the page.
